Planning & Resiliency COLLINSWOERMAN - SEATTLE
Working closely with CollinsWoerman's Resilience Lead to develop flood mitigation strategies sharpened my language and resiliency knowledge. I helped develop private studies for clients which demonstrated the potential of their property in an effort to inspire and engage developers, neighbors, and other involved parties. Using my past experience, interviews with the lead planners at CW and information gained from a few online seminars, I created a community engagement presentation and led a conversation around community engagement focusing on how to ask meaningful questions that result in actionable feedback.
Resiliency planning - King county flood CONTROL district
Working with elected officials from king county, and 3 cities within the Green River Basin, Tukwila, Kent, and Auburn, I assisted in facilitating a value building workshop to build consensus across organizations to implement integrated solutions to flooding which occurs in the Green River Basin. The workshops resulted in this final report where major challenges are identified, integrated solutions are proposed in a “toolkit” format, and key sites are explored for implementing the integrated solutions. Below are diagrams from the tool kit demonstrating the potential of the integrated solutions toolkit.
Commercial Development Study - Private client
This private development study was one of the first studies I managed start to finish, in addition to creating the graphic style and final deliverable with limited oversight. I coordinated a team consisting of one manager, who liased with the client, and one designer who helped vet the layout options being generated. I interpreted land-use and building code, as well as rough site data and engineering drawings of planned streets to create viable options for profitable development on the site which projected adding nearly 1,500 housing units across the street from a planned light rail stop in Bellevue, WA.
Data organization and presentation is essential for creating a clear story about the potential of prospective site. Coordinating data from several consultants and other stakeholders, I created concise and crisp graphics to communicate the site opportunity while considering spatial and regulatory constraints on the site. These graphics paired with meticulously tracked metrics help understand the full potential of the site without over promising on potential.
A clear understanding of IBC and land-use codes, how they interact and how they result in constructible massing.
Team coordination was incredibly important. This study was created in response to an RFQ, which only allowed for two weeks of work. Managing client expectations, communicate scheduling needs to the team and to the client, coordinating information between the client, consultant, and team.
Graphic quality control fell to me and marketing. I created and coordinated all the graphics shown and with minimal help from marketing, assembled and formatted the contents of the study.
Visioning - Chelan public utility district
Working with Chelan Public Utility District my team and I developed a conceptual marketing package to entice future developers to invest in Wenatchee WA. The development sits on the site of the former Chelan PUD HQ just outside of downtown Wenatchee and connects the downtown to the waterfront via a pedestrian underpass. With a emphasis on practicality and a focus on the streetscape and human experience, we proposed dividing the lot into three parcels and focused commercial activity along a pedestrian cut through that has come to be known as the Spillway Steps. The Development sits along a newly constructed pedestrian oriented street called “Electric Avenue” which connects a new YMCA facility back to other cultural catalyst such as the Riverside Theater and Downtown Convention Center.
